Acupuncture - Initial Consultation $30 Treatment $50
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific points shown as effective in the treatment of specific health problems. These points have been mapped by the Chinese over a period of two thousand years. Recently, electromagnetic research has confirmed their locations. Depending on the clients size, age, and constitution, the needles are inserted from ¼ to 1 inch in depth. Acupuncture is painless; however, the insertion of needles usually creates a tingling sensation. Some Western cultures may categorize these sensations as types of pain.

You will feel some cramping, heaviness, tingling, or electric sensation either around the needle or traveling up or down the affected meridian, or energy pathway. In any case, if you experience any discomfort, it is usually mild.

We use sterilized, individually packaged, disposable needles. Needles are not saved and are disposed of after every treatment. This eliminates the possibility of transmitting a communicable disease by a contaminated needle.

How does it work?

Oriental medicine is based on an energetic model rather than the biochemical model of Western medicine. Traditional acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of Qi (Energy) and Xue (Blood) through distinct meridians or pathways that cover the body somewhat like the nerves and blood vessels do. According to ancient theory, acupuncture allows Qi to flow to areas where it is Deficient and away from where it is Excess. In this way, acupuncture regulates and restores the harmonious energetic balance of the body. In Chinese there is a saying, "There is no pain if there is free flow; if there is pain, there is no free flow."

What should I do before a session?

The following suggestions will help you get the maximum benefits from your session.

  • Maintain good personal hygiene to reduce the possibility of bacterial infection.
  • Avoid treatment when excessively fatigued, hungry, full, or shortly after heavy exercise.

What should I do during session?
  • Relax. There is no need to be frightened. Ask your practitioner any questions you have along the way so that you can get the most benefit possible from the treatment.
  • Do not change your position or move suddenly. If you are uncomfortable, tell your practitioner.

How long are the visits?

The initial visit will last about 1hour and the subsequent visits will take up to 45 minutes. An average course of treatment for an acute problem involves two to three visits a week for a period of 5 weeks.

Cautions
  • Consult your practitioner before using acupuncture to treat morning sickness. Be sure to tell the physician if you are pregnant or think you may be. Certain acupuncture points can induce labour.
  • People on anticoagulant drugs may bleed easily even when thin acupuncture needles are inserted. Consult your practitioner before having acupuncture if you are on such medication.
  • Electrical stimulation of acupuncture needles could cause problems for people with pacemakers. Please inform your practitioner if you have one.
